Development of Model Anganwadi Centres

Launched in 2017, the Born Learning Program aimed to transform poorly maintained Anganwadi Centres into model Early Child Care Centres that offer safe, engaging, and developmentally appropriate environments for children under six years of age. Implemented by Sparsha Trust in partnership with United Way, Bangalore, the initiative focused on improving infrastructure, hygiene, and learning conditions to promote holistic child development.

Many Anganwadi Centres in urban and peri-urban Bangalore lacked proper infrastructure, sanitation, and learning materials. The absence of safe, well-equipped spaces limited children’s cognitive, emotional, and physical growth, and often discouraged attendance. Addressing these gaps was critical to improving early childhood care and education standards.

Children below six years of age from low-income families in the Sampangi Ramanagar Cluster, Belanduru Urban, Belanduru Cluster, and Hoodi areas of Bengaluru.

Identification of Anganwadi Centres in poor condition and assessment of needs.
Upgradation of infrastructure including electrical repairs, painting, and structural improvements.
Creation of defined spaces for learning, cooking, serving, and resting.
Provision of educational materials and play equipment for early learning.
Engagement with Anganwadi workers and parents to encourage participation and sustainability.
Collaboration with United Way, Bangalore for technical and financial support

40 Anganwadi Centres upgraded across multiple clusters in Bengaluru.
Over 680 children benefitting from safe and stimulating learning environments.
507 children successfully transitioned into formal schooling.
Improved hygiene, nutrition, and comfort levels within early childhood spaces.
Strengthened community trust and government collaboration in early education.
