Walked in with Curiosity, Walked Out with Gratitude.

Some experiences enter your life quietly, without warning, and before you even realise it, they leave a lasting impact.

Volunteering at Makkala Dhama was one of those experiences for me—a gentle, powerful shift that opened me in ways I hadn’t expected.

When I first stepped in as a volunteer, I didn’t really know what to expect. I thought I would complete my tasks, help wherever needed, and then leave. What I didn’t anticipate was how deeply I would connect with the space, the children, and the everyday moments that quietly grew into a beautiful bond.

Every smile, every curious question, every gentle, “Akka, can you help me?” reshaped the way I looked at things . Spending time with the children, listening to their stories, and understanding their emotions made me realise how much i often take for granted. Their resilience, joy, and eagerness to learn left a lasting impression .

Volunteering here didn’t just enhance my skills—it shaped me as a person. I learned patience, responsibility, and adaptability in ways that no classroom could teach. This experience boosted my confidence, broadened my outlook, and motivated me to continue contributing to educational and community development initiatives in the future.

To the staff at Makkala Dhama—thank you for welcoming me so warmly, teaching me, and guiding me throughout this journey.

To the students—thank you for your smiles, your energy, your stories, and your love.

And to myself—thank you for stepping out of your comfort zone and choosing to dedicate your time to something meaningful.

Walking in with curiosity, I walked out with gratitude, carrying learnings and memories that will stay with me forever.
